More»On its face the idea of going on a diet, and staying on it should be a simple one. After all, you just have to find a plan, prepare the foods and eat them. You also have to not eat the things that are not on your diet. It all seems as simple as pie, in theory. So, what happens in the real world to stop you from eating the things you know you should and not the things that you should not, right?
We tend to blame a wide range of environmental and social factors, like having no time to cook or an environment that markets and endless stream of bad for you choices in misleading ways. The problem, for many of us however can be much deep and harder to control. After all ads on the TV can be turned off, but your head is always on. Today, we're going to look at reasons besides hunger why you might eat bad for you choices.
Habits
Your habits can be a big issue with putting things into your mouth can tend to be more about what you have put in your mouth in the past than anything esle. Habits can be a powerful force in our lives and the ability to break a habit takes will power. The best way to do that is to form new and better habits but that will take time.
Boredom
Eating when you are bored is a nasty habit that many of us share. Whether it is munching while you watch your favorite TV show or eating at a tedious social setting, eating when you are bored can be deadly for your diet. A single session of mindless noshing can cost you 500 calories or more, and most of us cannot stand to have those extra calories in their day. So, you have two choices for boredom snacking: Either find another way to keep your hands busy or choose a better snack for your boredom munching. Grapes will do less damage than potato chips, obviously.
Pacification
If you eat when you're upset then you're eating to pacify yourself. There is only one thing to do here, and that is to find another way to make yourself feel better that is not self destructive or impractical.
Sociability
If all of your friends are going to an amazing restaurant you want to go too. The same thing if your co-workers are ordering a meal or that slice of cake at a party. If you feel deprived you will be upset, so you can either reframe your mindset or find choices out there that won't kill you. The urge to be social is fine, but just do not let it get in the way of your larger efforts and you should be good. You may
have to do a little bit of research to make it work but in long run it will be well worth it.
There you have it; you know why you might be eating when you are not hungry. Now the hard work begins because you have to make a change.
