Diet and exercise are two of the most feared words in the English language, because of what they represent. Sure, they are the foundation of a path to a healthier life, but they also represent the stone wall you have to climb to get yourself onto that path.

Diet and exercise are the two main fundamentals of weight loss and overall health and fitness. It all starts here. Anyone, no matter the circumstances, that wants to lead a healthier lifestyle must include some form of diet and exercise in their lives, although the type differs for just about everyone.

Diet

People cringe when they hear the word diet. It's usually associated with eating very bland food that never fills you up, leaving you starving and in a state where you eventually break down and eat more than you would have, had you just eaten a normal meal.

Diet and exercise

Dieting doesn't have to be that way. Just because you're "on a diet," doesn't mean you have to suffer. There are plenty of ways to eat healthy, delicious meals without leaving yourself running on empty. You also don't have to count every single calories that goes into your body, but monitoring the calories, fat and other nutrients in the food you eat is a great place to start, and a good habit to get yourself in.

The best thing you can do for your body is intake a balanced diet, no matter what you're eating. The food itself doesn't matter as much, as long as you're eating the right about of carbohydrates, protein, grains, dairy and vegetables. Make sure you start your day with a decent breakfast, one that includes some carbohydrates and protein, so you'll have lasting energy throughout the day. Keep your other meals, and snacks as well, as balanced as possible, and you'll not only be on the path to getting healthy, but you'll also feel great.

For some, though, a healthy diet is about more than losing weight and getting healthy. For some, the path to a healthy lifestyle requires a certain diet, for medical purposes. People with diabetes or gastrointestinal diseases may have to stick to a strict diet to help the symptoms of their illness diminish.

Exercise

Getting out and moving around is one of the most important things you can do for your body, no matter what condition you're in. Exercise is also great, because there are so many different things you can do, from aerobic exercise like running, biking and swimming to anaerobic exercise, like strength training.

These are exercises like running, jogging, swimming and biking, that rely on endurance and help your body, utilizing oxygen in the energy-generating process. These exercises burn a lot of calories, as they are sustained at moderate to high intensity for long periods of time.

Depending on your preference, you could go into anaerobic exercises, which rely more on very high intense bursts of energy for very short periods of time. The best example of an anaerobic exercise is weightlifting, because you're using your strength for short bursts, rather than an extended period of time.

Really, though, you should select an exercise regimen that you enjoy. If you're doing something that's fun and active, you'll be more likely to keep with it and continue getting yourself in shape. Many people hate getting up and going to a gym every morning. If that's the case, find something else for you. Maybe try joining a local pool for swimming or participating in team sports. The beauty of exercise is that there is something out there for everyone. Keep plugging away, and you'll find your ideal means of staying active and getting healthy.
